10 Years Under The Waves

She sat down at the piano
the most beautiful pianist in the world
dressed in a photographer's robe
I was rambling through the yellow pages
of my old slave's heart
for something better than gratitude
when upon the mucous she installed
the tiniest royal sailing ship
the sea has ever given back
saying, Sometimes I am with thee
sometimes I must go to where
a man is stranger to his pain.

Leonard Cohen , The Energy of Slaves

Original Release Date: July 23, 1996

It seems like it was just yesterday that I read a review on TIME magazine about this album and ran out and got it. It was 6.99 at Circuit City that week it came out. Instantly I was fanatical about it. Back then Sony had a message board for Fiona and that was about it, so I decided to make a fan page ( what a mid-90's teenage thing to do? ). It was called Under The Waves. Soon after I created a mailing list with the same name that got a following and a guy named Steve (I think) made shirts for it:

I got to meet Fiona once. I should have become a groupie and gone on the road with her.

Good thing I Scanned this because it got stolen. Ok, enough of this walk down memory lane.

The Moon

The Moon is outside.
I saw the great uncomplicated thing
when I went to take a leak just now.
I should have looked at it longer.
I am a poor lover of the moon.
I see it all at once and that's it
for me and the moon.
Leonard Cohen

+ "I had an affair with the Moon, in which there was neither sin nor shame......"

Nora Zehetner, the femme fatale in Brick.

    The moon's Celestial Highness;
There's not a trace / upon her face
    Of diffidence or shyness:
She borrows light / that, through the night,
    Mankind may all acclaim her--
And, truth to tell, / she lights up well,
So I, for one, don't blame her.
Ah, pray make no mistake; / We're not shy--
    We're very wide awake,
    The moon and I..."

What is a saint?.....

[ It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City - David Bowie ]

What is a saint? A saint is someone who has achieved a remote human possibility. It is impossible to say what that possibility is. I think it has something to do with the energy of love. Contact with this energy results in the exercise of a kind of balance in the chaos of existence. A saint does not dissolve the chaos; if he did the world would have changed long ago. I do not think that a saint dissolves the chaos even for himself, for there is something arrogant and warlike in the notion of a man setting the universe in order. It is a kind of balance that is his glory. He rides the drifts like an escaped ski. His course is the caress of the hill. His track is a drawing of the snow in a moment of its particular arrangement with wind and rock. Something in him so loves the world that he gives himself to the laws of gravity and chance. Far from flying with the angels, he traces with the fidelity of a seismograph needle the state of the solid bloody landscape. His house is dangerous and finite, but he is at home in the world. He can love the shape of human beings, the fine and twisted shapes of the heart. It is good to have among us such men, such balancing monsters of love

L. Cohen, Beautiful Losers

Saw I'm Your Man

I went to a screening of "I'm Your Man". One of the highlights for me was Leonard reading the foreword to the Chinese edition of Beautiful Losers. Was Bono talking about Mr. Cohen or was he talking about Jesus, Superman and Buddha incarnated into one? He easily wins the best ass kisser award out of all the interviews. Funniest goes to Rufus Wainwright who was kind of the co-star of the whole movie. At first I wasn't sold on Rufus's Latin cabaret take on "Everybody Knows" but it grew on me. Antony's "If It Be Your Will" was otherworldly. Jarvis did a theatrical "I Can't Forget", but its hard to overcome the pixies version.

+ Director Lian Lunson on musicians, poets and singers as "spiritual warriors"

the Voice

“That's the whole trouble. You can't ever find a place that's nice and peaceful, because there isn't any. You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking, somebody'll sneak up and write "Fuck you" right under your nose.”
J. D. Salinger

+ Who's the Voice of this Generation? Hemingway's rose like the sun. Kerouac found his on the road. So why can't today's young novelists express the essence of their era?

[ It's A Long Life To Always Be Longing ]

[ Hawksley Workman - It's A Long Life To Always Be Longing ]

I have no desire to do anything. I am afraid of nothing and I want nothing. I wait like a psychopath in a game of dodge-ball: breathing quickly while the fools decide which one will throw at me next, and jumping aside for no reason except that I like being in the middle. And there is no reason for being in the middle. Why not quit altogether and like outside the circle?

I have no idea what to say, I don’t know when I’ll see you again and I don’t believe in anything beyond the next ten minutes. People keep calling me and telling me what a great friend I am. Everybody is looking for someone who can stand up in the wind. It is lonely standing up and crowded lying down. I refuse to be an anchor for other people’s dreams – but then I refuse to anchor mine to anyone else. So I have no choice but to stand up and piss into the wind. Pardon my vulgarity.

It’s a pretty simple town

I think the major characteristic Lost and Twin Peaks share is starting out about one thing and turning out to be about another( "The owls are not what they seem" vs "I looked into the eye of the island, and what I saw...was beautiful" ). As questionable and misguided as Season 2 of Twin Peaks ended up being, it is a crime that it has not arrived on DVD already. I mean, this is the season that invented The X-Files after all.

Random Cast Notes:
// The Twin Peaks - Big Love cast connections: Laura Palmer's mom is Bill's mom in Big Love  & Roman was in Fire Walk With Me.
// Alicia Witt ( who "turned down the role of Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man" *) appeared in Twin Peaks once.
// What are the chances? Almost the same costume for two series. In Twin Peaks & in Stargate SG-1
