Romantic Desires As Inconveniences

"I've had a revelation about you", she said. I became worried. There are only a few things she could transparently know about me. She doesn’t know her power over me and it is my job to never let her know. It is time for an extreme exercise in discipline, so that she doesn't pick up the faint smell of a broken heart.

[ Muse - Falling Down ]

The snares of the world were its ways of sin. He would fall. He had not yet fallen but he would fall silently, in an instant. Not to fall was too hard, too hard: and he felt the silent lapse of his soul, as it would be at some instant to come, falling, falling but not yet fallen, still unfallen but about to fall.

LOST IN KALININGRAD: Tribute to the Lost series shot in Russian woods

I felt like lying down by the side of the trail and remembering it all. The woods do that to you, they always look familiar, long lost, like the face of a long-dead relative, like an old dream, like a piece of forgotten song drifting across the water, most of all like golden eternities of past childhood or past manhood and all the living and the dying and the heartbreak that went on a million years ago and the clouds as they pass overhead seem to testify (by their own lonesome familiarity) to this feeling. Ecstasy, even, I felt, with flashes of sudden remembrance, and feeling sweaty and drowsy I felt like sleeping and dreaming in the grass.

If you want to get a head start on the homework/headaches, here's what you should be boning up on:

Don DeLillo's Underworld. Alan Moore's V For Vendetta. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The Book of Revelations. The Greek word thipsis. John Mayer's ''Waiting for the World to Change.''  Creed's ''My Own Prison.'' The lost continent of Mu. All things H.G. Wells. Pink Floyd. George Orwell. The defunct performance art/electronica band The KLF. The word oulipo.

And dolphins.
