Rcrumb

Portrait of the artist as a young deviant from Newsweek's Photo gallery of "The R. Crumb Handbook". I've never been into Crumb much, except for liking the documentary, but I can't resist a James Joyce allusion. Robert Crumb on Fresh Air.

Chris Martin: Police, nudity, furious punters and taking out U2 : "What matters is trying to write the best tunes in the world. And having a picture of U2 on the wall, and trying to pump enough logs to take out the Drago [the Russian villain in Rocky IV] that is U2 - that's our mission. I don't care about being big. I don't care about being famous. I care about being a streamlined fighting machine."

THE RAMIFICATIONS OF SOMETHING SO UNUSUAL

THE RAMIFICATIONS OF SOMETHING SO UNUSUAL
by Anna Sunshine Ison

On Wednesday, they pulled a woman,
once-woman, out of the lake—
drowned who-knows-when
and turned into soap.
This is not the sort of transformation
we are taught to expect—
girls into birds, plastic surgery,
born-again Christians.
These changes we can deal with,
with little more than a stretch of belief.
But this. Bones become soft,
a face that fingers could reshape.
Is that what they did to bury her:
sculpt her into her original form
like Avicenna’s bear-mother
nosing her whelps? Or
is now the time for artistic license,
to gift her with a beauty she never had,
an apology for seeing her so undone?
I want to know if the coroner
found his hands unexpectedly clean
where he’d lifted her,
and if he plunged them into the muck
so he could have a stain to wash off
when he got back home.

Leibovitz's Women @ the D

I was in Dallas this weekend but I didn't get a chance to go see Annie Leibovitz: Women. Thankfully it will be there until August so eventually I'll go. Who the hell knew there was a Women's Museum in Dallas? The Wall of Words looks interesting.

Michael Zulli's TMNT

Before Michael Zulli did "The Wake" I had encountered his work in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #31, a comic book i really liked when I was kid for its stark contrast to the tv cartoons. I think this was collected into a trade paperback but I'm not sure. Funny that it featured many Matthew, The Raven like birs all over it. Years later Zulli's take on Matthew sort of became the best version of the character.

Chip Kidd

batmania

A few years back I got to go to a book signing by Chris Ware, Daniel Clowes and Chip Kidd. Believe it or not I was there for Chip Kidd. He designed the book cover to "Dreaming In Cuban" and it is one of my favorites. At that time I was not into "Ghost World" so I paid no attention to Daniel but got my "Jimmy Corrigan" signed by Mr. Ware. I noticed not many people were paying attention to Mr. Kidd so I asked him if he would sign a copy of "Dreaming In Cuba" and rushed downstairs to buy one. He came back two years ago but I missed his appearance. I was waiting until the in-store to get his book "The Cheese Monkeys", but since I missed it I just went and got it at Barnes and Nobles ( not the place where the in-store was at). It turns out that on his way to the bookstore he was signing at, he stopped at B&N and signed whatever copies they had of it and I got the last one. I think it says something witty, I'll have to look for it.

I've always liked this picture by Sally Mann that I saw in an issue of Entertainment Weekly, but never did know what the story behind it was. Turns out that its a photo of her daughter. When you click on the image it takes you to a page that has an audio clip of Sally giving a lecture.

Bloom County

'Will Bloom County ride again?'

Bloom County was the best comic strip EVER ( sorry Calvin and Hobbes fans). To me, it is the best chronicle of the 80's and I'm ecstatic that it is coming back!

Fans of the 1980s comic strip Bloom County will soon have a reason to start reading the Sunday funny pages again. That strip's creator, Berke Breathed, is working on a new cartoon that resurrects his best-known character, Opus the penguin. - NPR.
